Classification in Eras
As it is impossible to exactly know when an engine was produced I divided the whole period in six eras. In an era the engines share common featureres that are easily identifiable. These eras are not clearly definable as there is rarely a clear cut between design. Some types of engines may already have changed at a certain date while others still using old featu- res. Replaceale parts as steam whistles, safety valves, handles etc. may follow another time pattern but one can assign them to one or more eras where they were in use. You see that these eras are no fixed periods. They are helpful to limit the scope.
